Frequently Asked Questions

What are Zawadisha's Colored Seed Pencils?
Zawadisha's Colored Seed Pencils are a set of nine colored pencils made in Kenya from upcycled newspaper. Each pencil has a biodegradable capsule with a seed at the end, so when a pencil gets too short to use, you can plant it and grow vegetables or a tree.
How do seed pencils work?
Sharpen and use them like any other colored pencil. When a pencil gets too short to use, plant the end with the seed capsule in soil and water it. The capsule is biodegradable, so the seed inside can sprout and grow.
What seeds are in each colored seed pencil?
Dark green and light green pencils contain tomato seeds. Red and pink contain beetroot. Blue and yellow contain spinach. Orange and grey contain kale. The brown pencil contains Acacia gerrardii, an acacia tree native to Africa.
What are the seed pencils made of?
The pencils are made from upcycled newspaper instead of new wood, and each has a biodegradable seed capsule at the end.
Where are Zawadisha's seed pencils made?
Zawadisha's Colored Seed Pencils are made in Kenya.
How much do the Colored Seed Pencils cost?
A set of nine Colored Seed Pencils is $18 USD at zawadisha.org.
Where does the money from seed pencil sales go?
100% of profits benefit Zawadisha's micro-lending program in Kenya. The Zawadisha Fund is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Are seed pencils eco-friendly?
Yes. Zawadisha's seed pencils are made from upcycled newspaper rather than new wood, the seed capsule is biodegradable, and instead of becoming trash, the leftover pencil stub can be planted to grow vegetables or a tree.
Are seed pencils a good gift?
Yes. At under $20, Zawadisha's Colored Seed Pencils make a sustainable gift for gardeners, teachers, artists, and anyone who loves eco-friendly products, and every purchase supports Zawadisha's micro-lending program in Kenya.
Does Zawadisha ship seed pencils internationally?
Yes. Zawadisha offers free US shipping on orders of $75 or more and ships internationally. If you don't see a rate at checkout, contact Zawadisha for an international shipping quote.
Can I order seed pencils in bulk for schools, events, or corporate gifts?
Yes. For bulk or wholesale orders, email jen@zawadisha.org or use the form on Zawadisha's Contact page.
